Palenque Mayan Ruins

December 30, 2017

Well, there isn’t too much to write about Palenque ruins, beside the fact that they are amazing. The Ancient Mayan Ruins are up north in the Chiapas region of Mexico which are a bit out of the way to get to, we took a 16 hour bus ride to get here from Oaxaca. The ruins were thriving between 226 BC and AD 799, and Known as Lakamha or Big Water - though I apologize but I don’t know why it was called this. While they aren’t the biggest or most well-known ruins in Central America, this is actually a fantastic bonus as the areas are not only a little more rustic, but you can actually climb most of the structures and even walk inside the halls of others; something you simply aren’t allowed to do at most sights.

It’s possible to do day trips to Palenque from San Cristobal and other larger cities in the area, but it’s a lot of travel for a short visit. If you’ve got a little extra time, I’d recommend taking a trip and spending a few days in the city of Palenque itself (only a few kilometres from the ruins), or the backpacker haven of El Panchan which is about half way to the ruins.

We only spent two nights in El Panchan since there wasn't much budget accommodation, nor budget food choices. However, the biggest reason we didn't stay was because there was no stores to buy and make your own food, which saves us a lot of money overall.
